Can anyone tell me what is the best method for putting a pick-up on a dobro.
Where should I place it .I currently have a contact pickup on the front body but the results are so so. Any help?
Thanks |

Scott,
Check the archives on reso pickups. We had a great thread on this a few months ago.
IMHO. The Fishman passive reso pickup that mounts to the underside of the cone ($90) and the LR Baggs Paracoustic DI Preamp, do a good job for me.
Check Fishman Website. They make an active and a passive pickup. I like the passive because you are gonna need a preamp/EQ anyway. The active pickup requires a 9v battery inside the guitar. Hard to change on lots of resos.
Hope this helps.

I'll second that motion! The Fishman passive
pick-up and pre-amp do a fine job for me as well!!

I'm also looking for the best position posible for the transducer. Can you elaberate on this placement and What to look for as far as resonance. What to use and so on. I play in a electrical top 40 band and need some input badly. |

Do you glue it on the cone, or what? |

It is a little donut shaped pickup 'bout the size of shirt button. It mounts to the bridge screw on the back side of the cone with a washer and a locknut.
Instructions in the package. Check Fishman website.

If you put any pickup on the cone or on the spider, it will dampen the vibrations. That's why I don't use a contact mic -- it changes the sound of my instrument, killing some of the beautiful harmonics. It's a subtle change. Maybe some people can't hear it.
I stick to a microphone pointed at the guitar. I didn't buy a nice guitar just to ruin its sound by adding harmonic-killing stick-on electronics to it.
