Jeff says, "Hal and the other steeler (Sam Makia?) sound like a pair of frustrated horn players".
I don't agree at all. Those two steels are very well co-ordinated...no "frustration" there...it's an excellent arrangement. The only other version of Grass Shack which I think has a great jazzy sound is by a group called the "Hi-Lo's" ...(I think that is the name of the group...no steel) It really grooves! Mahalo for sending this around.

Jeff...the Hi-Lo's are/were from Hawai'i. If you listened to KCCN prior to the station going "sport and talk", guys like Brickwood played their stuff at least once daily. I pack along a radio/tape recorder when we're in Hawai'i for the prime purpose of recording Hawaiian radio. I must have a total of about 75 tapes of KCCN in each of my 2 cars. They beat local radio when driving in or out of town...KCCN was great prior to their change of (all Hawaiian, all day) format. Especially so around here on tape when the temp can dip to around 30 below!

Thanks Jeff (and Derrick) for the recent music postings. They are a great addition to the forum. "Little Grass Shack" is one of my favorites. I met Derrick Mau (along with Bobby Ingano and Sunny Kamahele) at the Moana on my trip to Waikiki last summer. He very kindly sent me a CD, which I really appreciated. Derrick plays a mean uke (I think plays steel too). Pass on my regards.
