Jerry,
I just learned the tune from the posted tab, written in 4/4 time. It is really fun to play.
It can easily be adapted to 3/4 time, but I don't think I've ever heard it played like that.
Maybe others know more.

John Steele was kind enough to post this tune per my request. It is a great arrangement. Another way I found to play this tune is up tempo-it is really fun that way also. One time thru as a ballad, and the next time thru with a swing feel. I first heard Herb Ellis play it this way on jazz guitar. |

Hi Jerry,
To my understanding, Tenderly was originally concieved to be played in 3/4 time.
Around 1951 or so, the fairly new Oscar Peterson Trio had a big hit with "Tenderly" in 4/4 time. The guitarist in the trio was the forementioned Herb Ellis. Since that time, I think it's heard more in 4/4 than 3/4.
I tried to write the tab so it would work either way, though my habit of late has been to play it in 4/4 unless otherwise requested. Thanks for the response!
-John
p.s. Another one I ran into on a gig last night was a request for "Always". The leader called it in 4. I'd never heard it that way, only in 3/4, but it turned out just fine.
Sheesh, some people even play "Waltz for Debbie" in 4!

THANKS Guys I also play it in 4/4 that way it makes a good jam tune. I was just checking to see what everybody else does. If you are playing by yourself, an want to hear all those pretty chords try 3/4 slow its not bad. Jerry |

Tenderly is traditionally played as a waltz, 3/4 time. You can hear me play a nice arrangement of it at my web site. Just go to the steel links page at the beginning of the Forum and look under Instructional material, The Leavitt Tuning. When you get to my site, click on the title "Tenderly". I hope you enjoy it. |

To continue the 3/4 - 4/4 theme, Doris Day recorded 'Sleepy Lagoon' as a slow 4/4

Mike, that's beautiful! And Basil, I'm a sucker for Doris Day, thanks for posting it. Now I have to choose, 3/4 or 4/4. I probably can't do it justice anyway.
