I was playing around and found this. I think it is part of the hymn *Because He Lives*.
BFG# to BFA to BFG#. This resolves nicely to the A chord.
Also what is BD#FG# to BD#FA. I assume I am still in the key of E.
Thank you;
Sherman

Probably E7b9 and Bm7b5.
"Also what is BD#FG# to BD#FA. I assume I am still in the key of E."
I would guess that they're a VI chord, over the C# bass note. C#9 and C#9+5. Does it resolve to an F# chord?

Thank you Dave and b0b. I was trying to find major and minor seconds when I ran across this.
Does the following logic describe how you derived the b9? The flatted ninth of the E7b9 is because the minor second of E is the F note. Do you say 7b9 because 2+7=9? In other words F to E is a seventh?
Thank you;
Sherman

An E9th chord is E G# B D F#. The D is the 7th tone and the F# is the 9th tone. It's not unusual to flat the ninth for a jazzier sound. E7b9 is E G# B D F.
E7b9 is very similar to a Bdim7 chord (B D F G#). The fact that you were resolving to an A chord led me to consider that E might be the real root of the chord. Often steel players mistake 7b9 chords for diminished chords because we don't think about the bass note very much.

Bobbe,
I was thinking along the same lines (Bass...), and then saw that you nailed it in your last post. Important to keep the root bass in mind.
