Sheet Music to Tab

Post by John Bumbarger »

I wondered how to go from sheet music to tab. I have the sheet music with the melody line and want to write out the tab. Can I just go from the music notes to tab or is there a trick to this.

Unfortunately, there's no trick. It's all hard work.

It's easy enough to do if you know your keys, chords, notes, strings, pedals, knee levers, etc. After about 10-20 years, you should get the hang of it! Image

Hi John,
Nice to see you on the forum. As mentioned, there's no trick-just a lot of trial and error finding the most effective way to play the melody.

By looking at the same songs tabbed by different steel players, I can see that their are many ways to go about this. Some tab follows scale positions and some use many single notes with some harmony notes added. Is this a clear picture of what I'm trying to accomplish ?

Couldn't you use Finale (computer program) to make the midi and then use clic tab to convert the midi to tab? Although this way (if it works) would cost some money.
