Sure would like some ideas on this Brad Paisley song. Sounds like most steel is on the C6th neck. |

After listening to this song again I suspect it is played on the E9th neck. It is truly a beautifly played turn around. Sure thought someone out there in fiber land would have some idea on how this turn around is played. Would appreciate some suggestions. |

Joe,
It's definitely played on C6. The tune is in E so the first chord is on the 4th fret. The next chord is a C#7b9, (8th fret, pedals 5&6), next chord is F#m7 (9th fret open), and next is Bb7b9 (6th fret, pedals 5&6). Play those chords and you'll be able to pick out the strings you want to hear. The bridge is fairly simple; mostly around fret 9 and 11 open plus the open 4th fret. The steel player in the song does some nice single note stuff that sounds like it may be an arpeggio on a chord (forward and back) plus there's a nice chord using pedal 8 (boo-waa pedal) that I haven't figured out. Nice tune.

John, thanks for the reply. I'm not all that convinced that it is on the C6th neck. The only thing that swings me to the C6th is the pedal drop at the first of the turn around. The rest of the turn around matches up nicely on E9th. I do not have the complete CD so I do not know the name of the steeler but would guess it to be Paul Franklin. |

I'll betcha a nickel it's Mike Johnson.
And I vote for C6, for what that's worth.

Larry, after I made the last post I listened to the recording again and the more I listened to it the more I was convinced that it was Mike Smith instead of Paul Frankling. Sure wish I knew how he dose that drop on the turn around. It doesn/t quite fit the pattern when I play it on my C6th. |

Mike Johnson played steel on Brad's first two
recordings with the exception of Earl Clark on one song (Cloud of Dust)on the "Who Needs Pictures" cd. Randle Currie plays on the third cd (Mud on the Tires) and does a fine job.
