A couple of people have asked for an arrangement of America The Beautiful. Here is the arrangement that I played recently at the Rhode Island steel guitar show. I apologize in advance for any errors... I put this together "by ear"... you know, the hillbilly way! I think it's pretty close.

Standard E9 tuning
D = lower E to Eb
F = raise E to F

Doug:
If I had a mind, I'd think you were reading it!!

Just after the tragic affair in your country a couple of weeks ago, I was sitting at my steel and playing around at trying to figure out your National Anthem. Being the non-accomplished player that I am, I just couldn't figure a lot of it out. Then, a couple days later you posted the tab for it!

Then, last night I was trying to figure out America, The Beautiful and you did it again.

Now, I've gone and registered Tabledit so I'll be able to listen to these two beautiful pieces of music.

My deepest thanks and appreciation!

Doug - Beautiful arrangement man! Thanks for posting it. As luck would have it, I'm playing at Ft. Detrick in Frederick, Maryland (now known for the origin of the military grade anthrax in those letters - we who live here knew it all along) in a few weeks. The guy who booked us asked if we could play a few patriotic tunes, and of course America the Beautiful came to mind.

This tune lays so nicely on the steel!

As most people know, the original tune goes on forever with about six verses – the full lyrics mentioning pilgrims feet and alabaster cities – it gets too complicated and no one knows those lyrics anyway.

I think in performance most people these days just do two verses and repeat the first “America” “chorus” every time, then close out with it again. Something like;

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife.
Who more than self their country loved
And mercy more than life!

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Pick a key, any key (pick G). But perhaps modulate up one key (to A) for the second verse.

Thanks again Doug, I appreciate it!

Best, -Dave

Wow! I never thought I'd see this 2 year old post resurrected! Thanks Dave... I'm glad that you can use this arrangement.

I also have "God Bless America" and "The Star Spangled Banner" on the free tab page of my site: click here

Hey Guys,
This past July 4th, I posted a clip of a C6 arrangement of those 3 songs. If you guys are interested, go to the "Jeff's Jazz" link below, and click on where it says "Patriotic Medley". It'll take a moment to download. Take care.
