I've been playing for about a year. Mainly doing the Jeff Newman courses. I have Alan Jackson's Drive CD and I really enjoy track 10 'When Love Comes Around'.

I would be greatly appreciative if someone more technically proficient than I tab the intro for me. I would like to use this as a goal and also something to practice something other than course material or scales.

Thanks to everyone on the forum. I have learned a great deal from this group of individuals.

E-mail the track to me as a .mp3 attachment. I haven't been doing tab lately, but it sounds like you can use some real help, and if it doesn't take me too long, I'll do it.

I'll take a stab at it. We play this every so often. And since no one plays anything the same way twice and since I'm setting here at my desk killin' time, take this as reference only. I'm sure PF didn't do it this way. (Mr. Lambert, please feel free to bleed on this)

Mr. Bullard,

Thank you so much for your reply. I also look forward to Mr. Lampert's reply as well. You said, "I'm sure PF didn't do it this way". My question in reference to this statement is: For a lick that sounds fairly string specific, are there multiple ways to play it and get the same sound?

Would this be because you can get the same chord but a different inversion of it by just playing different strings?

Can you elaborate on this for me??

Please excuse my newbie questions, but the more I can learn the better.

Thanx,

Yes, there can be many ways to get the same sound. And its fun looking for the different ways. The other ways will be using different pedals and strings whch is going to open up a bunch more new sounds for you.

When doing cover tunes I don't try to get it perfect, just recognizeable. There is no way you can know what was done in the studio, so why drive yourself insane trying to figure it out perfectly. If truth be known, I'll bet the guys that do the recordings aren't sure exactly how they did it either. Get it close, then play what you feel. Experimenting is how you grow. That's the fun in all this. Just keep in mind that when you're experi- menting, its not so important where you start a lick as where you end it.

I'm not as smooth-tongued as other forumites,
so I hope I made sense.

Mr. Bullard,

Thank you for the reply and the advice. I've played drums for many years and I have almost always been able to re-created the same runs/fills etc as the studio drummer did. But steel, especially for a newbie, is a totally different story!

Thanks again,

I didn't mean to imply that one shouldn't strive for perfection, just don't go crazy trying to achieve it. Oh, and call me Harold.

Finally got some time to tab it. Pretty close to Harold's. A couple of points. Where I have underscore a series of "X"s is a chord run that could also be done on string 4,5,6 using the "b,c" pedals, but the tonality and slides suggests to me that it was done on strings 3,4,5. And where I have underscored the letter "Y" requires a 1/2 tone drop on the 6th string, or a split between a full-tone drop and the "b" pedal. You can do it instead at the 4th fret using the "b,c" pedals, but the sliding technique suggests to me the the player (PF ??) instead played it at the 6th fret with a 1/2 tone drop. Anyway, that's how I hear it. Regards. .. Jeff
