The song starts in D and just before the vocal it changes to A. I have tried to work this out on several occasions and come up with a different answer each time.

What chords did they use to effect the change?

I'm not sure which version of the recording you've got, but I'd guess that it's probably

. . . .
D D F# F#
. . . .
B B E rest

Deep within my heart...

The F#'s could be augmented, too. I'm not sure. Try both ways to see which sounds more to your liking.

Thanks Ernie

To me it seems more like

D D F F
Bb Bb E E

But that doesn't seem right.

D F Bb Eb
would lead to the key of A flat as some people play it.

On the 1940 Columbia recording, the chords are as Mr. Bovine says.

Thanks Ernest and Dave

Yes that's it!

I had taken the old vinyl recording, and taped it onto casette tape to enable me to load it on the PC. In the process the speed wasn't exactly right and I had assumed it went to A. It does indeed go to Ab and I can now start working on my arrangement.

Thanks to everyone who replied - that's the power of the FORUM
