Moonglow

Post by Fred Truitt »

Thanks to those Forum members who taught me how to "mash" A & B and use the raise and lower levers, I'm now posting my rendition of this classic. Also thanks to Bob Wingrove for his track on the Northern Steel CD. It was a great inspiration. I need at least a D+ on this to pass this semester.

'Scuse me!
But I had to dig up this post. This was back about the time of the "crash". Since I had no feedback, I figured no one was interested or no one saw it. This was my first big Tab.
Have a look and let me know (honestly) what you think. ........Fred

Fred,
You definitely capture the essence of the song, which is tough to do on E9, so that's terrific. On that classic intro, which is repeated during the song as well, I think four-note voicings would be nice. Also, the chord on fret 7 with pedals A,B,R is a D9#11 chord, and is one of the highlights of the song; your chord is partially there, but I think it needs more notes, IMO. If you have an accompanying band, that would be different. I'm assuming this is done with only steel. Besides the basic stuff, what E9 pedals do you have? The 5th string 1/2 tone drop? The 9th string 1/2 tone drop? 7th string raise? Depending on what you have, you could extend some of the voicings on those chords. Do you have a C6 tuning available? If you do, you can extend these chords quite easily. If you want, I could tab a C6 version. Let me know.<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Jeff Lampert on 30 January 2001 at 01:40 PM.]</p></FONT>

Hey Fred,
Is this song by Benny Goodman featuring Clarinet and Vibes???
I heard that song about a year ago and thought "what a great song to work up on the steel".

Hello Jeff

Thanks so much for your valuable comments. You are so right on the extra voicings needed. Unfortunatly I don't have either drop nor the 7 raise. But, I'm finally gonna get on that C6th neck if you will kindly post the tab. I think I'm ready for it. Thank yourself for giving me the "kickstart"

Best Regards....Fred

Hey Pat

This is the one! I think the last time I heard it was in the soundtrack of "Picnic", but it's been so long I can't remember. Stick with us on this, it's a fun song.

Take care.....Fred

This was done by Benny Goodman and I think was in the soundtrack for "Picnic". Fred, once you do it on C6, I don't think you will want to go back. If you love songs like this, as I do, then IMO, this tuning brings out the best in them. Do you have the basic 5 floors and 1 knee? Do you have any extra knee levers, like a fourth string raise or lower? I'll tab it on a basic 5+1, but if you have a fourth string lower, I'll also show you how you can tweak it a bit. I'l have it by the weekend, the latest. Just need a little spare time. Regards .. Right on guys!!!!!
I also thought C6 for all those cool voicings that the Vibes wiggle out like crazy.
I'll be watching.
Thanks,
Pat

Hi Jeff

My knee lever lowers the 3rd string and pedal 4 raises the 4th. I do have 5 floors and 1 knee on the c6th. All the best....Fred and you too Pat.

Moonglow in F, C6 tuning. All that is needed is the basic 5 floors and 1 knee. I haven't tried it all the way through since my steel is packed. I'll check it out tomorrow, hopefully. There are some good alternative things that can be played here and there, and we can get to that over the next several days. Key point of the song to me is the Eb9#11. Great sounding chord, works in many pop tunes, and is perfect for this song, IMO. Chords above line 1, words and comments on line 10.

Jeff

This is exactly what I need to get started. Great chords. It will take me a little while to get my feet untangled but I'll conquer that. Al, great to see you on here again.
Best wishes.....Fred
