diminished chord for E9

Post by Bob Hoffnar »

Key of C.
V7 back to 1

1
2
3
4
5 6a 6 9 8
6 6 6 9 8
7
8 6f 6f 9f 8
9
10
G dim dim C

Once you find youself playing a dim triad any place on the neck you can move it up or down by 3 frets(minor 3rd) all you want. Just land in the right place and it works great.

Good example, Bob
The progression shown is G - G#dim - G#dim (inversion) - C

Another way to do a similar thing is

1
2
3
4
5 10A 11 1/2A 14 1/2A 15A
6 10B 11B 14B 15B
7 10 11 14
8 10 11b 14b 15

G6 G#dim7 inversion CMaj

This uses the four-note version (the dim7).

Thanks Bob,
But isn't the second-last chord G7b9 ?
I know it looks like a diminished chord, but...

I usually add the 9th string in there too. There's a small temperament problem, but the chord is dissonant anyway so it doesn't matter much.

Here's one of my favorite E9 passages:

1 ________________________________________
2 ________________________________________
3 ________________________________________
4 ________________________________________
5 ____8_______7_______6_______5______3##__
6 ____8_______7_______6_______5______3#___
7 ___________________________________3____
8 ____8_______7#______6_______5#__________
9 ____8b______7_______6b______5______3____
10 ________________________________________
Amin7 D7b9 Gmin7 C7b9 Fmaj7
The second and fourth chords look a lot like diminished chords, but they make more musical sense as 7b9 chords.
