| Hello Im kind of playing around with my old fender deluxe and was wondering what gauge stings I need. I want to play around with both c6 and and the old Don helms hank williams stuff. would I need two necks with different gauge strings? anyways help lol. Joe |

Before you decide on gages, consider the scale length of your guitar.
John Ely's web page on string guages is the best I have seen.
Mr. Helm's used E6 on many tunes. This tuning has the third (G#) on top. For the keys that they used, this puts the bar in a good playing position on the neck.

Joseph, I have two Dickrson/Magnatones set up just for Hank williams tunes (C6/A7 and E6) as used by Jerry Byrd and Don Helms. My string gauges are on the heavy side, which gives me a better sound on my cheapo lap steels. I think you need two steels because the two tunings (C6 abd E6) are too far apart from each other string gauge wise. I've found when you can make a cheapo instrument sound good, you can pretty much play any instrument. One day I'll have some nice steels and really be able to do them justice. Good luck...  |

Dickersons and Magnetones are real nice guitars ...
I have a Magnetone Lyric D8 that has this wooden humbucker type pickup ... instantly Hawaiian sounding ...
I read on this forum that Magnetones were the "Workhorses" of the Hawaii Calls guys for years ...
Jesse ... I hope my reply to your Dickerson/Hoopii/McIntire guestion awhile back didn't make you think less of them ...
I just read that Sol and Dick were friends of Mr. Dickerson ... did alot to get these steels in the hands of MANY players by endorsing them... but used Rickys for recordings and performances ...

Hi Rick, I dug what you had to say about Sol and Dick, I figured as much. I really like certain Dickerson/Magnatones because of how they are set up and the sound vs cost thing you find with them. The "Hawaiian calls" guys, were you talking about the table steels or laps?
