Opinions please. ( I know you guys like doing that)
I picked up a near mint 'matched' 1957 Skylark set over the holiday. Literally an 'attic guitar'. The guitar and case is dead mint. The amp would be save for the Gibson sign on front is missing the 'ib'. Korina 6 string lap. Original tags, keys, bars etc. are still in the case. Case is primo as well. Gibson made a ton of these. The amp sounded sweet till it blew a fuse. I think it just needs some tubes and caps replaced. Doub't it's been played in 30 years or more. Has a sweet Jensen speaker in it. Amp and Case are blond covering. The amp just says Gibson, doesn't say Les Paul Jr., or Skylark - but is an early GA-5, w/ single 6v6 power tube, single pre-amp 12ax7. No trem. Single chicken head vol. knob.
Any opinions on value? I paid $500 for the set. Couldn't find too many ref. on the web at the time so was flying blind. But did find 2 GA-5s selling for $250 and $275 in Vintage Guitar mag. I like the sound of the amp and will really use this guy! The guitar sounds nice, but isn't amazing. But I'm thinking about starting some Sr. Center classes for a community service, and scrounging up 6 strings as I can. I have about 5 now.
cheers,
chris
