Moving knee levers from right to left knee on this old Capri

Post by Jimmy Moreland »

Hi folks, weird project on this weird steel. Not a lot of info out there on this brand. I got it last week from a guy in Augusta, ME. I asked Dana Flood, he said he didn't know about this guitar.

The more I study this thing, the more weirdness I discover. It's 3x2, with the knee levers on the right. The fretboard has these god-awful alien head decals, and they're facing the opposite way I'd expect them to be.

There are plenty of old screw holes underneath. All this makes me think that this was set up for a lefty at some point.

One of the fingers is broken off, and two are pretty bent. I think I'll do the same thing that was likely done with that string 1 finger and swap out 9 and 7's straight fingers for the bent ones.

Then comes the big project: Moving the knee levers from right to left knee. I think I should be able to get LKL to raise my E's and LKR to lower them. Given that each finger only has two holes, string 4 E could be a problem - it seems that LKL and C should be able to work off the same rod, using locking barrels to set the tuning. I'm worried about there being a bit of a traffic jam on that 4E, but I'll figure it out when I get to it I guess.

Would love to hear any insights y'all may have on the history of this guitar (google only shows hits from this forum in '19, '15, and '04). Would also love to know if I'm setting myself up for disaster with this project. I would like to have this replace my Carter Starter as my travel steel. It's about as light as the Carter, feels way more solid, I love the pickup sound, and it obv has way more mojo. I don't use my right knee levers much on my Carter, so I think I'd be fine to lose them. Thanks y'all! 🤠

The Parts look very much like an early Marlin the Pictures are of an early Marlin I added 3 knee levers to.

That does look very similar! Best lead I've gotten, since the old threads mention the builder going on to work for MSA, but I didn't see any parallels to old MSA parts and this thing. Wonder if I'll be able to find replacement fingers once these all finally break off or bend beyond repair.

With the changer being pull and release, The changer looks like an early Show bud permanent. The Bell Cranks are made like Emmons push pull bell cranks,
It looks like a dream that became a reality around 1970. From the hacksaw marks on the bottom end of the fingers, The guitar looks like it was hand made a piece at a time. The knee lever bell cranks look custom made to match the pedal bell cranks.

The 4th string lower is hard to put on a pull and release, because it has to be raised with 5th string on C pedal, And raised on F knee lever. (And then there is Mr. Lloyd Green, No lower on 4th string, and gets all that music out of his guitar.)

You may be looking for problems if you want to use it as a gig guitar. If something breaks it would have to be hand made.
Good Luck and Happy Steelin.
