I discovered Red Simpson a few months back and I love his truck driving schtick. Who was his steel player? It's real good no nonsense Bakersfield sound steel up front playing. Very Mooney and Brumley esque.

Anymore info on Red?

Also this might be like top ten album covers of all time unironically, I hope Gen Z discovers it the way they discovered Marty Robbins Gunfighter Ballads.

The Highway Patrol is a classic. Love the cover version by Junior Brown.

I believe it was Leo LeBlanc on most of Red’s stuff. Leo was also featured heavily on John Prine’s early albums

The steel player heard most prominently in Red's recordings was Leo Leblanc. Leo was a gifted player and spent most of his time in the mid to late 1960's in Bakersfield playing clubs and doing session work. He is featured on many other famous artist's records too. He was a very nice guy and passed away many years ago. I've pasted a link below with some information about him. Hope that helps.

That John Prine song was one of the first things I learnt to play... Good stuff! BTW, the best truck driving song ever recorded has to be "Semi Crazy" with Junior Brown and Red Simpson.

I met Leo LeBlanc at the Opry back in the 80s...

He told me he played with George Jones for a short time in the 60s after Hal Rugg...he got the gig because Weldon Myrick couldn't fit into the band uniform!

Nice cat...bout legally blind when I met him...can also be heard on Gary Stewart"s"Your Place or Mine"album on the tracks that were cut in Muscle Shoals...Leo was living in Memphis when they recorded the tracks.
