I voted for him for governor of Texas in 2006. I smoked cigars with him. He was the head counselor at my kids' summer camp in Medina, Texas. My kids would glow when they spoke of the Friday night campfires where he would sing his songs. On Saturdays, he used to drive the laundry truck into town. All of my family will miss him.

Kinky had a lot of funny quotes. One of my favorites is…. the definition of politics. Poly means many, and ticks are bloodsuckers. Many bloodsuckers.

I heard one his today: "I was so high I needed a stepladder to scratch my butt" although he didn't say butt.

Sad news. He had a weird and wonderful sense of humor. If you haven't read his crime novels, please do – he's a much better writer than he was a singer.

I enjoyed his satirical song lyrics and his detective novels. If I had been a Texan, I'd have voted for him. You can't beat campaign slogans like "How hard can it be?", and "Why not?".

Kinky was asked about gay marriage and he replied, "why shouldn't they be allowed to be as miserable as the rest of us?"
