Once the complex overlapping tone controls are mastered, these preamps are a total winner. It took me a while, but I'd never part with mine. I replaced all three tubes with JJ 12AX7MG (mid gain).

RTP tone controls
It takes some time to learn how the tone controls interact, but there's an amazing amount of control and options...The best preamp I've owned for Steel or Guitar.

Had one for a few years and probably should've kept it ... these are a REALLY nice unit that you can shape about any way you want.

Also, once new tubes are broken-in, you get that infamous "growl or hair" when the tubes are pushed that none of the tube simulator preamps or class D amps can duplicate properly.

Jerry, I did some correspondence with Brad a few years ago. He also has some posts on here about tone settings. The treble control is also the mid shift. Full on and your mids are at 300hz. Treble full left and mids are at 1000hz. The sweet spot setting is around 3.5 if using the dial numbers. That will set your mids at 700hz. Then you can adjust the amount of dip at that frequency with the mid knob. The color knob warms the mids if desired. Also, the Gain control at a low setting (counter-clockwise) gives a crisp tone. Turn the gain clockwise and your tone is warmer. Use the master volume control for your volume setting. Bass control is an independent control (by itself). These are just basic tricks to maybe get where you want to be for your over-all tone. I just use the treble control to set my mid frequency and get my treble and warmth with the other knobs.
