JW On the Alamo tuning?

Post by Tim Toberer »

I like trying to play these old standards, even though I have no business doing so, and should probably stick with simpler stuff. On the Alamo is a popular standard for steel guitar so I like to try it out. I made a little headway, but the chords are pretty vague specially towards the end of the verse. The Real book seems close. JW transposed it to F I am guessing to sit better in his preferred tuning. Usually in Eb.

I ran across this video and really love this version. Any idea which tuning he is using? I remember reading somewhere that JW uses an E13 and a C6, I am assuming the E13 is on the back neck but you never know. Can't see what he is doing at all. He also uses a nice "minor cliche" about 1:00 in. Those slants are so clean! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bm-3gg9xIWA&t=3s

Hi Tim,

I like this rendition as well. A little while ago I figured it out. I think it lays out pretty well on C6 standard tuning.

I thought it sounded like C6. Thanks I might try it out. I need to keep up on non pedal. I like this version as well, but this one is on pedal steel. Sounds a bit like Vance Terry.
