Double-8 recommendations

Post by Brooker Buckingham »

Hi everyone. I've been playing a Carter Starter for a couple of months and then this past week, I saw Big Sandy and His Fly-Rite Boys play at a small club.
I had an epiphany watching his steel player, Jimmy Roy. He was playing a double-8 Sho-Bud pedal steel, but he rarely used the two pedals he had flipped down. Mostly he ripped out the most gorgeous Murphey/Boggs/Helms licks. Needless to say, I'm hooked!
So what would you folks recommend as a good double-8 investment? I've been scouting out a few Gibson Console Grandes. They look real nice.
I haven't had much luck finding Fender double 8s for sale. Any other recommendations? I appreciate it.

Brooker, go to www.countrypickin.com and have a look at the used steels page - Jeff Bradshaw has a D8 Fender available. Jeff's a great guy and a fantastic musician - plus he lives in "God's Country" just east of Rocky Mountain House Image

I have a pristine dbl-8 Rick on wood, like the one on eBay. Mine appears to be in much better shape. Has suffered no indignities, never damaged, nor banged around. GREAT SOUND.......fabulous pickups.

Brooker, I hope you know Jimmy hails from Vancouver? I have a nice 52 Fender D8 in Walnut for sale if you can't find one. Check Buy & Sell, get it before I eBay it.
Before getting the Sho~Bud from Andy in Germany, it's # 2, Ben Keith's old steel, Jimmy used the the Trapazoid Pu guitars exclusivly. I know he's got 2 T8 Customs and at least 1 D8 and a 1950 S8. He found this one for me and always told me it was the best sounding one he had heard.
You ought to have heard him play that Bud through his 65 Twin Reverb with a JBL D130F in it. His best tone ever!
[This message was edited by Mike Black on 18 August 2002 at 01:30 PM.]

[This message was edited by Mike Black on 18 August 2002 at 01:31 PM.]

Brooker, if you're looking for a double eight, I have about 10 that I'll be selling.
