I never thought about this till I had to chart it. Ending chord in a tune in the key of E, pedals down at the second fret, strings 4,5,6,7. It is obviously a B6. but in this context, it is used as an Emaj.7 with a II on top. SO, would it be referred to as a Major 9 or a Major 7 add 9?

major 9

anything above 7 (9, 11, 13) also includes the 7

Thanks Scott. I knew that about a 13th, but I didn't apply it in this case.

Yeah I call it major9. that's how I ended our version of "An Empty Glass"key of G; so GM9 is my last chord(5th fret A&B pedals down strumming 9;8;7;6;5;4; so it's at the END of the song here>

Strings 7 6 5 4 (pedals) down at 2nd fret would be a G#m7 (same notes as a B6 with the 6th in the bass) superimposed to act as a rootless Emaj9. Much easier to think of as a G#m7/E in that context imo.

There is no such thing as a "Major 7 add 9" chord. Here are your options

C Major 9 = C E G B D

C add 9 = C E G D

C9 = C E G Bb D
