Waikiki Steel Guitar Week and Festival 2022

Post by David Famularo »

Some very nice playing at the Hawaiian Steel Guitar Showcase at the just held (July 2022) Waikiki Steel Guitar Week and Festival 2022 which you can watch on Youtube. Not posting the link since there was an announcement on this site asking people to get the permission from artists to post them playing and I wasn't sure this is required for publicly videoed events. Just do a Youtube search. Anyway, my favourite discovery so far is Kiyoshi "Lion" Kobayashi.

Kiyoshi Lion Kobayashi is in the video at the link below [at 57:58] explaining his Excel no pedal all lever guitar, 9 levers on a 10 string. His copedent is shown [at 100:09]. He then proceeds to demonstrate some fine playing...at 89 years of age. Hope for a youngster like me at 77.

Thanks! Would you know what tuning Margie Mays is using?

Thank you Dennis Brown for posting that link!

I could not tune in during that weekend. There is some excellent playing in that two hour video.

Thanks again!

Hi David. I was at one of the HSGA conventions in Hawaii I think about 2014. Margie Mays played there that year. She had C6 on the far neck and B11 on inner neck. She was a "Jerry Byrd" student in her early days. An excellent player and very professional.
Regards Jim.

My pleasure. I wasn't sure if somebody else had linked to it, so I posted it.
