I’m about 75% through with arranging. It’s a tough piece to play but there are no real real shortcuts or cheats, so it’s a matter of working it out. This is sloppy in the way that I like sloppy. Thelonious Monk is my guide.

You hide a lot of the work that went into that, Mike. Cool beans! _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

According to my notes, I started working on this tune on 1/13, so it’s been three weeks. I work on tunes like I read books though, usually three or four at a time. And I’ve listened to at least 50 versions of this tune. That kind of gives me an indication of how far I can stray from the written music—the real answer is there is no limit, but that freedom will come in time.
Even since I posted this clip, I’ve revised my approach to a couple of things that I thought were stumbling blocks. I didn’t change them, I just found new ways to do it. This is the real beauty of doing this. I have come up with many of my own techniques that I use a lot now and it has opened up the doors to playing all kinds of music, especially solo.
I look forward to finally being able to play the piece in full. I give it another 2-3 weeks for that. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |
