Jim installed a tunable split of the 5th string of one of my older MSAs. They said it couldn't be done, but he did it.

Jim is a M(ighty) F(ine) genius when it comes to stuff like this.

Jim--is that wrap-around piece the same as on a Carter? I've deemed this type of split tuner as impossible on my Carter but this sort of looks like my Carter but I can't quite tell. I'd love to add a split on my 5th string but I'm all out of changer holes to do it with the rod method.
Also, did you have to remove the changer to do that?

It is not necessary to remove the changer, Jon- just loosen the strings so that the resulting tension does not rip the changer off when the rear screws from the bottom of the guitar into the back of pillow blocks are removed. I'm not sure about the Carter configuration as I don't have one in front of me right now but but all you really need is to install an adjustable screw (try go use at least 40 threads per inch to allow for more precise tuning)that will limit the lowering of the finger(not the scissors)in question and use the same split tuning method as described by others. I'm sure that a call to Bud Carter would answer specific questions that you might have- he is a peach!
