I just bought a 1970 Emmons D10, the string spacing at the nut is smaller than my '72. When did this change? Do all earlier Emmons have the smaller spacing? It's taking some getting used to. |

I have the same problem on my 1970 D10.....Thought it was all in the mind, but I had just come off a ShoBud D10 and found the narrowness of the string spacing on my Emmons quite off-putting ! I wonder if one could fit a slightly wider nut ??
It seems there is a slight taper along the strings from the bridge to the nut.
Comments, anyone ??

Nic-
My '72 Push Pull has a wider nut and more even string spacing throughout the neck. I think the keyhead has a different design, it doesn't look like it can be changed. |

Hi Joel,
I must say that I have become used to the spacing, but when I play on my friends Shobud it's like driving a bus ! Not cumbersome, but much easier to execute those big grips !
Anyway, I'll stick to the Emmons, though.
Regards,
Nic

I had a 71 PP and don't recall any difference between it and my current 81 Franklin. There may have been but nothing that I could detect. When I got the Franklin, other than the easier and better pedal action there wasn't any "getting used to" playing it.
However, in early 72, Hank Corwin ordered a special built Emmons D-10, PP, with a 12 string spacing because of his small hands. The 12 string's that were built at the time had a slightly narrower string spacing. |

These are pics of my two push pulls showing the different keyhead design. Does anyone know if Emmons changed the nut roller size in a certain year and stayed with it- or if the two sizes were an option?
I'm just guessing that around 1971 Emmons changed to wider spacing.

I bet Bobbe Seymore is reading all this, and not saying a word in case we start looking for replacement keyheads and maybe the changer as well ??!!
Yeah, my 1970 P/P looks like the first pic....with the black and white atoms.
What to do ?
I defninately play much easier on the Shobud. Maybe that's why Ricky stayed with Shobud.
I reckon the overall measurements of the keyheads remains the same, with only the nut section slightly enlarged ......now it begs the question whether the changer had extra spacers, or had been changed at all.

Dang Joel! You've got 2 D10 PushPulls!
I have a Pro II Sho~Bud and a D8 StringMaster. They have very different string spacing and it takes me a few minutes to get used to it when I switch guitars. However, one I start pickin' I get used to it again and I forget all about the spacing. Luckily you won't be bring both Push/Pulls to a gig!
Cheers!
Mark

I can't see the bid deal with the string spacing at the nut end as long as the string spacing is the same at the changer end. That's where you do the picking. |

That's a good point, Erv. But it does make it seem a little more crowded throughout the neck. It's not a big deal, they are both great guitars. I just wanted to point out something I never knew about when I was push pull shopping. I'm just curious about Emmons Co. chronology and if there was an answer to my original question. |

Joel,
You have a very keen eye!
I've worked with a lot of Emmons and I never noticed it. |

Joel,
If you will measure both at the nut, I will measure mine and we all can compare. I always assumed that all P/Ps had the same nut spacing. I have earlier and later P/Ps.
Also, we still need to get together.
All the best,
TC |

Hey T.C.
I measured right at the nut roller from string to string and my '72 measures a pinch over 2 and a half inches and my '70 measures 2 and 3/8ths. It doesn't sound like much but you can see it with the naked eye and it feels different playing- especially wide grips on C6.
We'll definitely get together after the holidays die down. |
