Post by Tom Booth »

Hi There,

Hope this is the right place to post this.
Is there any pedal steel players in Minnesota that might be able to help me with a issue with my guitar?

Thanks
Tom

MN Steel Guitar Lessons

Post by John Ely »

Tom, look up Albert Svenddal (I think the spelling is correct) here on the forum. He's a pro-level player and excellent teacher, here in the Twin Cities. He has a lot of students. Really a good guy...good steel mechanic too.
Good luck
John Ely (but I'm not THE John Ely who played with Asleep at the Wheel).

Yes, Albert is a great guy.
In fact, he just called me the other day and he is setting together a sort of instructional get together on April 1st.
He is expecting approx 100 to 150 steel players to attend from the upper Midwest.
Tom, you need to get in touch with Albert, you could learn a lot at that meeting.
I'll PM you his telephone number.

Where in MN are you located? There are a couple of other new players in SE MN that I know of. I'm also down this way.

Steel Players in MN

Post by John Ely »

Greetings Dick, if you look on the bottom of my signature line, I point out that I'm not THE John Ely who played with Asleep at the Wheel. It's THAT John Ely who played with the house band at Midwest Country Theater in Sandstone, MN, and on Midwest Country TV. He lives in northern MN.
He's a Grammy-winning pro level player and great teacher; I'm just a hack but I enjoy it.
He and I are friends, I wish I had a fraction of his talent.
I do note that you're a Nebraskan; I grew up in Auburn and still have family in SE Nebraska. Best, John

What are the odds of there being two steel players named John Ely, both from Minnesota? Pretty low I think. One of you is lying.

p.s. I'm working on lining up a small tour in MN later this year so, if it happens, I'll get in touch with BOTH of you and I'll get to the bottom of this once and for all! ;-)

Jim,
There is a town in northern Minnesota named Ely and it was named after one of John's ancestors. (Not the one living in Mpls). :D

That's interesting, Erv. I'm familiar with Ely because, years ago, that was the basecamp for studying wolves in Minnesota. Don't ask me why I know that; it's a long story. 8)
