Recommendation needed - standing up

Post by C. Eric Banister »

I'd like to get a lap steel I can play standing up (dobro style, not on a stand) and I'm looking for recommendations on what brands are recommended. Mainly playing rock/blues/country on it.

No set budget (willing to save, I've got time!)

Thanks!

There are a few ways to go about this. I had one built for me. Megan Lovell’s custom Beard is now available as a production model. Lap King and Asher have variations on a bar or arm that keeps the steel at a good distance from your body. You can even make your own version of a “belly bar” with some aluminum angle to attach to any steel (I did this on my Melobar lap steel).

Weight is a consideration. If you’re standing, that’s a lot of strain on your upper back. It’s different from a Tele or even a Les Paul, because the body of the steel is horizontal, so the weight is further away from your body. 6 to 6 1/2 pounds is nice, more if your back is in better shape than mine :D

Cindy Cashdollar plays her lap steel naked...no belly bar. JD uses a belly bar on the same model...and Megan Lovell's model imitates the body side of her standard dobro....so there's more than one way...

I just don’t understand why some people consider country music cornpone and maudlin 😎
A banjo, like a pet monkey, seems like a good idea at first.

These are designed to be played standing. They also can convert to a guitsteel. You can see the double neck before and after the Spanish guitar is attached with thumb bolts.
PM me if you are interested.
