Info on WRIGHT CUSTOM PSG

Post by Fred Bova »

Hi, is there any info on Wright Custom PSG's anywhere? I used to have one, an old cable pull Birdseye Maple one, and it sounded great. I'd love to find any info on these guitars.

Go to David Wright's website. His Dad was the genius behind the Wright Custom. David has some info in the "MEMORIES" section of his site.

You could probably email David also. http://DavidWright.ws

Ah, brings back memories. I used to have a Q8 Wright Custom in early 60s built when Chuck was in Red Bluff, CA. It was a card table, but had a tone to die for.

I know that Tom Baker has one. You might call him ask about. Tom is a fantastically courteous man and I'm sure he will tell whatever he knows about his Wright Custom.

Here's some pics of mine: http://www.netsonic.fi/~mnk3b48a/jussi_steelguitar/

This poor thing was originally a quad but someone brutally chopped the inside neck off.

the Wright that Tom has was built for Tom Morrell... Tom traded it to A steel player name Bobby Dixion in Dallas...Tom got a Fender in trade , and traded it in for a Bigsby I believe... the ol Wright sat under Bobbys X wifes bed for some 20 years befor he got it back, I took in trade for the All White Sierra I played at one time...

Thank you all so much, I will scan and post my only picture of my Wright soon. I was VERY spoiled as my Wright was my first pedal steel. I do remember that when I bought it the previous owner had just bought a new steel with ATOMS on the fretboard (Emmons)and he said that he liked the sound of the Wright better. I figured he was just sayng that to try and sell the Wright. After I sold the Wright and bought and received my Emmons sight unseen on the recomendation of a pro, I found I also did not like it as much as the now sold Wright. The only problem I ever had with the Wright was that I was able to hear the cables "creak" though the pickup to the amp at times.

My Wright had the handles on the sides, the black krinkle paint and Blade pickups, and the square black krinkle changer with the alum top cover. I would Love to have one of these pickups !

I do hope there is another Wright in my future.

Thanks again, Fred

I had MANY pictures of Wright/Sierra guitars as well as from dozens of other mfrs. Some years back, I gave up on it and sent the collection to Tom Bradshaw. It was a file box full. There were also some pictures of early steel get togethers, such as Napa and Dallas. There were pictures of Chalker at the Dallas meet the time he put the guy down who called out "play something likd Emmons!"

Also a lot of changer patent dwgs. I gave up on trying to keep up on every make of pedal steel as they became mostly similar with a few striking exceptions (Howard, Norwood, etc.). Sierra's changer was different, most were MSA clones.

Tony L,
My D-8 Wright looks like its from the same era as the Willie Williams guitar. If I knew how to post some pictures, I would. It has the black crinkle paint, same leg set up, fingerboards, pickups ect ect, but a metal pedal rack instead of wood. I have not found a date on the guitar. Do you know what year that instrument is.
Fred Bova... Your description remindes me of my guitar. I got it from a store in Carson City Nevada..... thanks to a forum member. I'll email you a photo if you are intrested in seeing it.

David W, do you know how many Wright Customs were built ?

I love the tone of mine.

David, thanks for posting my picture. Anyone notice that I am using a Blackface Fender amp for a seat ? Just the right height in a pinch, and ... the reverb springs sounds very nice when they are vertical. I also remember now that this Wright did not have big metal end pieces. It was all wood. I believe there were simple metal leg supports under the guitar in the corners, but I don't remember if the the legs were screwed in or held in with a thumbscrew. Been too long, I wish I still had it.
