My new Recording King square neck resonator guitar arrived today. It was a store demo model, and came tuned to a G chord with a D on the bottom, DGDGBD.
How common is that tuning?

This is my first resonator guitar, so I have a lot to learn.

That’s a very common tuning, especially if you are into blues or anything with a 1-5 alternating bass. The “standard” tuning for Dobro is GBDGBD, which is very likely what that guitar came from the factory with. You should be able to try both of those without changing any strings.

Thanks David. I was afraid to pull those bass strings up not knowing what guage they are. I have a standard set of strings on order to compare.

I keep mine tuned to the low bass version, DGDGBD for a couple reasons. I like having the low bass note, and I use the same tuning on my regular fretted (non-lap) guitars.

I believe that most Dobro players prefer the high bass GBDGBD version though.
