The Grovers on the C6th neck of my recently-acquired LeGrande 111 are really stiff. Maybe the back neck was hardly played and was only rarely tuned.

Does anyone have a solution? I can't see where they might be lubricated, and I'm nervous about breaking something.

Thanks,

RR

Earnest, I phoned Ralph Mooney last week and I ask him, "Moon, how'd you tune that old Fender"? He replied, "I reached over there on the left side and turned them little buttons". After giving considerable amount of thinking I spect he is on to something.

Roger,
How tight are the screws on the buttons?

Earnest,

I don't know - I'll have to wait 'til someone can listen to it and let me know.

Colby,

That might be an idea - I'll look and see....

That's the first thing - the little screws on the edge of the buttons are designed to tighten or loosen the action. If that's not the problem and they have "hardened up" inside somehow, you can take the little screw out completely and the button pulls off and you could drip some lubricant inside. However, the grease inside is pretty thick so I'd maybe ask Grover what to use - it could turn into a bigger job than you'd like, disassembling them, cleaning and repacking them all with grease. Their customer service is really great, I had a tuner go bad (after 20 years or so) and I sent it in and they sent me a new one free, no questions asked. If they're making little grinding noises, that's sort of a hint....

Roger...what David said...the screws on the end of the buttons adjust the tension. If you look closely, you will see a curved tension washer between the button and the case. It does not have to flat to work properly.

I appreciate the suggestions. I'll be trying to adjust those screws later today (after golf...)

Thanks!

I have to, Ken - I'm not 'up there with the Gods' yet on the golf-course ....

Back to those Grovers....

I loosened a couple, then tried them. I had been afraid of stripping something inside, but now I'm finding that they're getting a bit easier with a little gentle twisting. The screws were probably set correctly, so I've returned them to where they were.

I now think that they'll be OK with a little use - I was being over-cautious, perhaps.

Back to real life - I'm on the tee at 11.30....

It sounds like they're just kind of dried up and stiff.
I'd squirt a little WD40 on the shafts to work them loose and then apply some 3 in 1.
