Sho-Bud Fingertip SD-10 Rebuild

Post by Bob Muller »

I am finally getting a chance to work on this Sho-Bud Fingertip. Going to build it as an SD-10 using most of the original Fingertip parts. This will have four knee levers, and three pedals. I am ready to install the rods and electrical wiring next. Not sure how long this well take me.

Ooooh….ahhh! Shiny knee levers. Great work, as usual.

I have not had a lot of time to work on this project lately, but have made some progress.

Aw..ya got me teary-eyed when I saw that "TrueTone" pickup from Jerry Wallace; I miss my longtime friend Jerry so much. We came up with the perfect winding for his pickup in a sho~bud; so does it say 17,500 ohms on the bottom....????
Bob the Fingertip is looking GREAT!!!... so now I'm curious; how do you tune the barrel
-tuners without reaching underneath?? (not that it's a big deal to reach; but just wondering what you are going to come up with that will freak me out and maybe have me start working on the fingertip again....ah...ha.....LOL
YOU'DA MAN!!!

Ricky I had to think of you when I pulled this pickup out of the box. Does not have a coil tap, but I never used it anyway. The barrel tuners are tuned from the bottom, but when they are set I don't recall ever changing one. Here is a photo of the pickup for you.

More Tears.... :\ after seeing that.
Actually Jerry HATED to make a coil tap pickup BTW; he would only do it when I had to talk him into it...ah..ha....but he always did a wonderful consistent job and every one he made.
But yes; after us trying 6 different ohms totals....
17,500 is IT !!!!!
And yeah thanks for the update on the barrels...I figured it would be too much a prob to have a rod turn it....but you are Soooooo right; Barrels are VERY stable when set.
Stay with it bro...you do MASTERFUL work my brother.

Yes Bob & Ricky, 17,500 ohms is it. I love it. I think I have brought three of these and the last one is in my Performance SD-10 guitar now. So Sorry that Jerry left us so soon. J.R. Rose

I have made some more progress on the Fingertip now. all of the undercarriage has been installed, the key head and changer casting is on, and I have a set of strings installed. Now I have to start tunning and adjusting to see how it will play. I still have to make an arm pad to cover the back neck.

I am rethinking this project a bit, I may put the back neck on instead of a pad. I will set this up as a 6 string Dobro neck and use external electronics for sound effects. Here some photos of a mockup neck for the guitar. I will use an 8-string fretboard for this neck.
