Topic: Fender Pedal Steel, 3+4? |

| Does anybody know anything about the rodded Fender pedal steels that had 3+4? I know a guy with one for sale. I haven't seen it yet, but seem to recall some talk about these guitars here on forum a while back. It's not the Maverick-type or the 400, but a Pro model Fender pedal steel. He said it was red, rodded, and had 4 factory knees. I'm going to see it on Sunday or Monday. Any info in the meantime would be great. Thanks. |

Thanks, Bob.....I've since found some old threads, after a bit of digging. It's apparently an Artist 10.
Anybody have any idea what the Artist 10 with 3+4 would be worth in excellent condition? |

Depending on the price, you better snatch it up...if you don't let me know...I'd be interested.
If you do buy it & get a great deal...lie & say you paid a fortune for it...it will make me feel alot better

Chris,
The Fender S10 Artist is worth $500-$750, depending on over all condition. They were lacking in tone and the tuning keys weren't the greatest.

I agree with Bob regarding the tuning keys and value, although they've gone for more. The tone's more subjective - they were made by Shubud, and it seems like Shobud was aiming for their type of sound. I find them (well, the entire two of them I've seen) pretty shill sounding. It's possible a pickup change could mellow it some, but they just seem to have a lot of top end.
Some seem to really like them, so there must be some appeal. I'm a Fender guy, though, and have not been all that attracted. I guess my experience with the Maverick version soured me on the whole cheesy amp-logo-and-black-tolex design that indicated Fender had totally lost interest...hence the fact they're not Fender except for the nameplate. |

Hey Chris,
One of my students owns a black one. 3X4. When he first brought it to me I suggested a few mods to bring it up to playability.
1) I trashed the pick-up and replaced it with a JW True-tone. A wonderful improvment but beware I had to route the tail piece a bit to fit.
2) It is a 2 over 2 changer with little room to add much. However I did get away with F# compensators as well as 2 extra pulls on the knees.
3) There is no room for a 1/2 stop on the RKR so you just have to live with Eb - D.
4) It is very light in nature. Too much knee motion and it may jump a little.
5) The ash tray head stock tuners can not be changed. (Built into the design), so you have to live with a sort of restrictive tuning ability. Change the strings a little more often and you should do OK.
6) It is very light and good for travel.
