Bands to check out next weekend?

Post by Cody Coombs »

Does anyone have any suggestions on bands to see in or near Austin and San Antonio the first weekend of November?

Thanks in advance!

If you can't be a good example, be a horrible warning.

Some of my favorites in Austin this weekend:

Shinglers are at ABGB on Friday. Great cosmic country. They guitarist plays both guitar and steel but doesn't always bring the steel.

Jake Penrod at Little Longhorn on Sunday. An Austin institution. Great Hank style honky-tonk. He typically sings and plays guitar, but lately he's been playing steel at his gigs too. He's supposed to be great on steel. He gets good steel players when he doesn't play.

Nick Garza then Croy and the Boys at White Horse on Friday. Nick Garza does Tejano Honky Tonk, no steel, but a fun show. Croy is another Austin institution. No steel usually, but both of these together are a great night out.

Summer Dean at White Horse on Saturday. Summer Dean is awesome old school honky tonk from Fort Worth. She was touring with Muskrat Jones but I think he's doing other stuff now. I'd bet she'll have a new steel player.

If you're here on Monday Jim Loessberg is doing Steel Monday at Sam's Towne Pointe.

You picked a great weekend for music in Austin.

Wow, thank you all for the suggestions! Definitely looking forward to hearing some great music down there.

A side question, are there any music shops in those areas that are geared towards steel guitar? Bars, picks, effect pedals, etc.?

Thanks,
Cody

South Austin Music is the best shop for steel guitar stuff (and guitars in general) but it's still not very good. They have one Remington pedal steel in stock right now but it's in pretty bad shape. They've got a few older lap steels but nothing to write home about. They have a drawer of slides and steels but it's mostly dobro stuff.

They do have a good selection of effects pedals. So does Austin Vintage Guitars. They have some decent lap steels occasionally too.

Hi Mike,

Thank you for mentioning the Steel Monday at Sam's Town Point. This December we will be there on the 12th.

I hope some of you can come!

Thanks a million,

Jim

Hey Craig; yes Jake was playing a very rare Single-10 Sho~bud Fingertip that I restored for him; it is certainly EVERYTHING Honky Tonk when he plays the heck out of it.

That's cool Ricky, they sent me a short video of him playing, he seems like a nice guy, they see him often and have gotten to know him a bit.
