My Sho-Bud presently has Emmons setup on C6 with 5 pedals and One lever. Would like to add 2 or possibly three levers and need to know the best pulls for more chord voicings.
Need some pros advice on this whose chord theory is more advanced than mine. Help me out here guys. Don

Add KLs till you have 4......never mind a vertical for now. I'd say Buddy Emmons C6th uses 4 KL to good advantage, as I recall. I don't think you could go wrong with his knowledge. Then as they say: practice, practice, practice!!! You'll have all you need or want, I'd guess. I have a steel that was meant to be an E9th guitar & I wish I had as many on the floor as you do....I only have 3, but I do have 5 KLs......I'd give you my neat vertical just for good measure! Never did get used to that idea! |

Not typical, but built originally from
Big E's C6
Raise C to C# (V) us it tons
Lower C to B (RKL) need it certainly, but not used so much at the moment,
but for jazz you want it.
Raise A to Bb (RKR) used constantly
Lower A to Ab (LKR) used a lot, but less than others
Lower E to Eb (LKL) used constantly, especially with RKR,
AND I use the 3 frets up minor method too.
Some will SURELY disagree,
but this works well for me,
both physically,
ie not getting worn out over-using a position,

My most important knee is raising str 4 A to Bb.
Second is lowering str 3 C to B.
I don't have str 3 C to C# but I can see how incredibly useful it would be. I do lower str 4 A to Ab but don't use it a whole bunch, mainly with P5.
One option is to put a couple changes on one knee lever and back off the changes at the endplate so you can try both.
Another option is to wait on adding anything until you've played long enough and feel that there is a change you really want but is missing. |

The A->Bb change is so commonplace that it is almost standard. You absolutely need to put this change on. The others are gravy. See my chord chart from the link below. That one simple change opens up many, many chording possibilities.

Another cool change is to lower the middle G to F, and raise the low C to D on the same lever. The lower pull might seem redundant since the 5th pedal also raises the bottom string up to D, but it's not.
I do agree that the A-Bb and the C-B changes are the most mandatory KL's.

I do that too Earnest (RKR)...it now frees up my 4th pedal for a really cool middle C to D raise.
Do you do that change on your D12? With a KL that works both necks? |

Yes, it is on my RKR, and on E9 it lowers 2 G# strings to G. On this old Sho-Bud, I don't lower the high G#, and the G# .020p and G# .042w happen to provide a lucky half-stop for the A .020p on the C6 neck.
I've changed it a little since the version posted here on b0b's Forum.
Now I lower the middle C (.036) on the knee lever, as well as the high C.

The most important C6th knee lever changes to me are:
high C to C#
high C to B
middle E to F
You can view my 12-string C6th copedent here. I don't play much jazz - I use the C6th for blues and western swing.

I've recently put my As up to B (the old pedal 4) on a centrally-mounted vertical 'knee' - it works really well for me, and is very easy to 'half-pedal' for the Bb.
I may now do away with my old As to Bb (RKR) and reassign it somehow.
Same with my old pedal 4 - it's a bit redundant at present.
I have: (D string on top)
LKL: C to B
LKR: Both Cs to C# (essential in my view)
MKV: As to B
RKL: Middle E to F, and string 10 - C to D
RKR: As to Bb
