does anyone know how to recreate the celluloid covering known as mother of toilet seat that was somewhat common on lap steels back in the ‘40-‘50’s? specifically, how was the celluloid shaped? was it warmed and vacuum formed? some of the lap steels i have owned wrapped completely around rather generous corner radius’. i am really interested to understand how this was accomplished. without causing any structure fires. thanks |

According to the definitive Richard Smith book...
...the celluloid came in very thin sheets, was cut to size, soaked in a vat of acetone, and formed to the body by heating with a blow torch. Whenever the factory was engaged in the process, Fender had sentries posted to keep a lookout for the Fullerton Fire Marshall, who was understandably freaked at the prospect of setting downtown ablaze. |
