I've been meaning to string up one of my Weissenborns in C6th but have never gotten round to it. Curious as to what gauges people are using for C6 on a Weiss or Dobro?
Years ago, Bill Asher gave me this advice ...
For new Master builds C6:
C E G A C E
.039, .032, .026, .022, .018, .013
For vintage acoustic Weissenborn type guitars use this lighter adjusted set:
C E G A C E
.036, .029, .024, .019, .016, .011
*NOTE always use a wound third string _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

I was literally logging on to see if someone had sound/video of a weissenborn in C6 or A6. Hopefully someone does. |

Adam, this is 15 years old and low res .... my version of Amazing Grace on Weissenborn. It was, I think, the C6th intervals tuned down to A6th or G6th.

I was thinking to try B11 on one of my Oahu's, I'll probably use the same gauge strings I use on my electric, maybe a tad lighter with the 25" scale. |

Weissenborn guitars were not designed to be played in a high tuning like a C6th and they just don't sound good with light gauge strings. That goes for vintage or new ones. I'm well aware of the older ones not being able to handle a lot of tension but the key is to tune them down to (like a high A tuning) or even G and fit them with at least a medium gauge strings. I also think a plain 3rd string is a far better choice. |

That was always my thinking, Chris, but I've never actually tried it other than tuning a set of Dobro strings down to G6th or A6th. My Bear Creek was actually built to take higher tension tunings but it sounds so good in D I've left it there for 25 years. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |
