John, Just got off the phone with James. He seems to be doing very well today, here's hoping he continues to improve.

I was on the phone with him when you called! He does sound better today! Steroid shot yesterday seems to be helping. We were talking about him getting his shop set up, which is great news!

I did't realise I have one of thoes all elusive single neck Fingertips> Mine is a 9 string I made out the order for the guitar before I went to Vietnam, told my wife that I would let her know when to order it...so when I was pretty sure I was going to survive I told her to order it. This was 1967 I think it came in July or early August, I got home the end of August after it got there.This is back story to establish the year it was made.the serial number is #7-230-230 stamped on the inside of the left end plate and cabinet. it has a cast tuning head with a heavy Gumby horn? I has the small knurled tuners that go up against the bar also has the acorn end, heavy cast pedal bar.Cabinet is Cocobolo and Birdseye Maple...It also has the bubble rod pullers 3 total as I only ordered 2 foot pedals no knees, saving some bucks, also did't realise I should have 3 foot pedals. one of my pictures shows 3 I cast some of my own....

Here is a picture and video of me playing my Fingertip. When I bought it the changer endplate was broken in two pieces right down the middle. I welded it back together and from the outside you couldn't tell anything ever happened. It was originally a D-10 but someone took the rear neck and parts off. I built an armrest from genuine leather. This is what it sounds like after my repairs.

Great looking 9 string Fingertip Mike. What does the underside look like, and is it original? I have not seen a 9 string single neck before. I did find a D-9 Fingertip which I have to restore.

Sorry Bob I had started to change the underside as I am trading it for a double neck MSA, A friend wanted something a little lighter than the MSA.I am adding some knee levers too...I have some pictures of the parts I made to put on the Bud, I also have a couple of the MSA...I will attache..later

I believe this is the guitar Mr. Morehead posted Feb 25, 2014. He did some work on it and it went through a couple owners. He added a roller nut and redid the undercarriage of the E9 neck. E-F+E-Eb knees were added. Nothing was hooked up on the C6 when I acquired it last year. I managed to add a few changes to the C6 and one knee lever that works on both for the Eb-D second string lower and C-B lower on C6.

Here’s the underside before I added rods to the C6 and the third knee.

All my previous Sho~Bud guitars have had nylon tuners, so this is a first for me.

Wow! That’s a legendary fingertip. Hal played that on the Wilburns brothers show, and on a bunch of records. Glad it’s been located!

Hal played many different buds in the 60’s. He even had a crossover at the same time he played that blonde permanent. Here’s him on Lem’s guitar:

Well that makes sense; cause through the years, I have seen Hal behind many different 60's Sho~bud...but I never really kept up with or inquired about specifics; so I just don't know details enough to be saying: "this is this or when or who's" from 60's.

Silas, I think Ricky has a point with the picture of Hal you posted showing a two-tone (blonde maple top) D10. Lem's guitar has no blonde maple anywhere on the cabinet! Unless it's been painted?! Also the side-of-neck inlay is a totally different design. Lem's has the wooden star-of-david design (1964?), whereas Hal's has the zigzag wood inlay (1967?). I just acquired a D10 Sho-Bud with a hacked-up changer, with that same star-of-david inlay...

This just in from Bruce Zumsteg....OMG; that's Sonny G with his Push-pull next to Hal's Shobud with new vertical knee and I'm thinking that is Weldon's new '65 Wrap with split tuning, behind Hal's???. So I'm thinking this is 1965(Bruce 2nd year opry visit). Here's what Bruce said:

"I think you might be right about the year. We went to the Opry 2 years in a row, and it was either 64 and 65, or 65 and 66. I know the first time, Weldon was still playing with Bill Anderson and Weldon played his great ride on 'Bright Lights and Country Music". I don't recall any steels other than ShoBuds that first time. The following year Sonny Garrish was with Bill. Pix attached. That was Hal's ShoBud with the special vertical KL,
next to Sonny.

This is probably the coolest looking ShoBud that I ever saw (in my opinion). The front apron was a solid piece of Cocobolo with the heartwood and sapwood divided in this unique pattern. I'm pretty sure it was a permanent. I don't recall seeing Charleton ever
playing a fingertip. (Ricky or Johnny Cox, correct me if I'm wrong)
