Bakersfield looking for a steel player in Philadelphia area

Post by Michael Clagett »

Hey there —

Does anyone know any steel players in the Philly area who might be interested in exploring a new project we are putting together: Bakersfield — a tribute to 50 years of quality country music?

Current lineup is:

Drums/vocals
Bass/vocals
Guitar/Keys/vocals
Lead Telecaster
Female vocals

We’re down a steel player after the gent who was working with us decided it was too much travel time for practice. We can practice for free in Ambler, PA but are also down for renting rehearsal space if needed to make it accessible to everyone involved. Practices are currently Tuesday evenings.

Strong musicianship, good vocals, and nice people. To give an idea, here are 12 tunes we have been working on in our first few practices:

C’est La Vie
Emmy Lou Harris
Key of F

Good Hearted Woman
Leann Rimes
Key of C

Dim Lights, Thick Smoke
Dwight Yoakum
Key of F

One Hundred Years From Now
Byrds
Key of G

Here are the two substitutions:

Instead of Dillard and Clark’s Polly I substituted:

Willin
Little Feat
Key of G

And at the request of another band member, I am substituting Flying Burrito Bros. Hot Burrito # 2 with:

Ooh Las Vegas
Gram Parsons and Emmy Lou Harris
Key of E

Here are the six we did last time, just for reference:

Crazy
Patsy Cline

Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You
Bob Dylan, off of Nashville Skyline

You Ain't Goin Nowhere
The Byrds, off of Sweetheart of the Rodeo
Key of G

When Will I Be Loved
Linda Ronstadt, off of Heart Like A Wheel
Key of Eb

Mike you might get better response if you posted some of your own work. When I clicked on your links I thought I was going to see your band’s version of those classic songs. I would be surprised if anyone on this forum is unfamiliar with these tunes so no need to post links to performances we are all very very familiar with. My suggestion would be to record your rehearsal so folks have an idea what you sound like.

Hey Bill —

Thanks for the great feedback. I would post some clips — if we had any. But this is a brand new project and we haven’t captured any tunes yet. But you can be assured that after a couple more practices we will be ready to record a few tunes for demo purposes. And I will post them here as soon as we do.

Thanks.

Mike
