Mr. Sandman - Stringmaster (RIP)

Post by Bill Terry »

I just found this old MP3 I did with my early 70's Stringmaster. (Please excuse the cheeseball BIB track) I forget how cool non-pedal can be sometimes.

Sadly, I think this is the only recording of that guitar I have. This Stringmaster was burned in the wildfires in Bastrop, TX last September. I sure miss it... If I remember right, I recorded this direct into Paris (the old Ensoniq DAW).

Very nice, really like your style, sorry to hear of the fate of the guitar though, 24.5" scale Stringmasters are my main go to instruments and it will stay that way..

Do you happen to remember the tuning you used for that take?

Thanks Hugh.. Unfortunately, I don't remember what tuning I used, only that it was some flavor of E. I do remember that whatever the tuning was, it made the single note intro riff very difficult to play (for me at least). You can tell, it's pretty sketchy.

Yeah, that fire sucked... I lost an original '59 Bassman, a'69 Deluxe Reverb, a Session 400 that belonged to Tommy Detamore, a killer Partscaster, and plenty more.

Interesting (if not morbid) sidebar. I had an OMI Dobro at Tommy's studio when my place burned, and against all odds, a few months later Tommy's studio burned to the ground, along with my Dobro. Sometimes you just can't win.

We decided to just 'call it square' on the Session 400/Dobro thing.. :-)

HI BILL,

Thank for posting "MR SANDMAN". 8)
This is perhaps the best sounding Stringmaster I have ever heard. :D

Roger and Stephen.. Thanks for the feedback guys, I appreciate it.

Roger, I don't know if it was the best sounding Stringmaster I've ever heard, but I sure liked it. I've kinda been watching for another one, but they've gotten a lot more expensive in the last few years.

Wow... what you might find with a SGF search.. 10 years ago, I'd totally forgotten this (and amazingly the link is still live).

I've since replaced that lost Stringmaster with a '52 Dual Pro, but it didn't come cheap. I remember when you could barely give away a Stringmaster or Dual Pro, for many years they were a few hundred bucks, max. That's sure changed.
