Who is this - Damn Strait

Post by Richard Sinkler »

Who is the steel player in this video of Scotty McCreary singing "Damn Strait" on the Opry. Really nice playing.

And, does anyone know who played on the record? Paul?

When I saw Scotty in concert opening for Brad Paisley a few years ago, his steel player was Justin Ward. On the record, the steel player is Mike Johnson.

Mike Johnson, if we're talking about the studio version. That touch can't be no one but his. One of the finest session players.

I was wondering about the player in the video. Nice to know it was Mike on the record. One of my favorite players.

That is Justin Ward playing in the live video. I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of weeks ago working a S.M. gig locally. Great guy and fine player. He had a Blanton that he told me once belonged to Jimmy Day if I remember correctly.Pleasure to listen to him!

Right. It was Mike on the record playing some of the nicest stuff I have heard in years. Justin did a great job on it live too. Love the song.

Videos are synced, even when it looks live, so your basically listening to the studio cut. So, your actually hearing Mike Johnson, but Justin is on the video, acting like he was playing it. In an actual live show, yes, you will hear Justin playing it.
