What book/method has Complete set of chord shapes?
I was wondering what is the best book/source that has all shapes/grips for all chords and inversions, including all 7th chords min7, dom 7 plus extensions/alterations, half diminished etc., for both E9 and C6 necks.
When I was studying chord shapes on guitar we learned about drop 2s an drop 3s. Drop 2s are basically taking the inversions for all 7th chords, dropping the second note from the top one octave to open the voicings so they are playable on guitar. This would lead to 4 different shapes for all seventh chords on each set of of 4 adjacent strings on guitar (i.e., string groups 1-4, 2-5,and 3-6). For every chord you would end up with 12 different shapes to memorize for the drop 2s and 8 shapes (strings 1,2,3&5 and 2,3,4 &6) for the drop 3s. This would pretty much cover all the shapes you would need to get obtain the shortest path between chords like ii-V-I's which makes for very nice voice leading. Is there a similar approach to pedal steel guitar that is TABed out somewhere.

Of course 1000 times is more than once.Ian Rae wrote:More than once?
Does that make it worth the money?

Sounds like one of those “1001 Chords!” books that gives you 20 chord shapes, labels them with all their synonyms, and then transposes them to all 11 other major keys and their relative minors.Derek Evans wrote:Hi Mick I have in my collection of tutors ,Hal Leonard pedal steel

I just ordered this book and I sure hope that it is not just triads and relative minors.Fred Treece wrote:Sounds like one of those “1001 Chords!” books that gives you 20 chord shapes, labels them with all their synonyms, and then transposes them to all 11 other major keys and their relative minors.Derek Evans wrote:Hi Mick I have in my collection of tutors ,Hal Leonard pedal steel

Tom Bradshaw has his chord book posted on his website. It has major, minor, diminished, augmented and extended chords in the key of E, all inversions on the neck, for standard e9 3&4 setup. Transpose accordingly for whatever key you are playing in.

But where is Bradshaw's
Hey, I happen to know the answer to that question: It is at http://www.songwriter.com/bradshaw/chor ... uction.php And I think every steeler should know what's in it.
P.S.: For reasons unknown, when this webpage opens, it doesn't open to the beginning page. If that happens to you, scroll down to the end of whatever Chapter does open, then click on the beginning Introduction titled "A Bit of History."

Fred,
It's worse than you predicted. I ordered the book and received it yesterday. It was a serious disappointment.
First, there is a picture on the cover with two necks but the content is only for E9 and it does not even have all the grips in one position for a major chord. The front page and the product description do not even mention it is only for E9. I am sure disappointed. I wrote Hal Leonard to complain. We will see what they say. I will find a way to use it but there must be something out there that is more comprehensive for both necks. Also as you imply, it is wasted space to do the same shapes for all 12 keys. Why not just get all the shapes in all positions for one key and be comprehensive.

I provided the wrong link address to my "Chord Construction..." paper. I also added another notice about the paper, so everyone please go back and read my previous entry. ...Tom
