No, I didn't just get one... I had one some years ago, though. I've asked about it a time or two in the forum here and got no replies. I just thought I'd try again.
I bought an old Sho-Bud D-11 permanent for $275 back in 1978, in Amarillo, Texas. The guy I got it from said he was thought that it might have been built for Bobby Garrett, but didn't really know.
It looked very much like this permanent from Bobbe's site at www.steelguitar.net , click on Vintage in the menu at left and scroll down for the permanent. Click on the small picture to see it bigger.
Instead of the little dark wood squares in the inlay strips, mine had little star shapes, and mine was a D-11.
Does anyone know anything about Sho-Bud D-11's from the permanent days? Any photos of any? Did Bobby Garrett ever have one?
I've been wondering about all this for many years, any info would be appreciated.
By the way, it stayed in tune, the pedals had the lightest, smoothest feel I'd ever tried at that time and it sounded like Sho-Bud heaven.
I've kicked myself ever since for letting it go.
Thanks.[This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 12 September 2006 at 01:20 AM.] |

I have a T-11-11-16 Permanent that was made for Bobby Garrett around 1964. It's currently mired in the early stages of restoration and I have an Emmons D-11 P-P that was originally made for Bobby. So I now equate anything D-11 with his name, except for a D-11 that was made for Bill Echols. |

Thanks guys... Tony, that's a beautiful Bud, wish I had one like it but the inlays on mine were still different, the little dark wood stars were close together.
Anyone have any idea how many D11's Sho Bud made, and any photos of them? Wonder what the one made for Bill Echols looked like?
I would have thought that Bobbe would probably know exactly when and for whom my old steel was made, probably would if I had a photo of it but don't have a single one.
That old D11 is for me "the one that got away", and from my own short-sightedness. Waaa.[This message was edited by Jim Phelps on 12 September 2006 at 01:54 PM.] |

Jim, Bill Echols' D-11 is a wrap-around Emmons from Feb 1965. As fate would have it, both Emmons D-11's are here. |

Oh, thanks Chas, I thought you meant it was also a Sho-Bud.
I'm thinking Sho-Bud,(probably everyone else as well) didn't make too many D-11's.... so I thought it might be easier to I.D. the one I had, but no one seems to know much about it.
Bet someone knows... |

Nah, I don't think your Baldwin thread scared anyone away, Chris.
Despite the vast knowledge pool that we have here at the forum, I guess I just finally found something that nobody knows anything about. |

i bought an emmons D-10 many years ago that the owner thought might have been built for barbara mandrell, or the steel player in her band....i don't really care, 'cause i love it and i got it for $700. it had ten floor and i think 6 knees...tobacco color laquer or whatever..wood necks...it's a great steel even though it was bent and beat, but didn't have much wear on the mechanism. i rebuilt the rods, etc. set it up 9+7. anyone know of barbara mandrell's steels? |

Don't say I said so, because; I'm not at all sure of what I'm saying, however; it seems to me that I remember a D–11 Sho-Bud was once owned by the late Jim Murphy, back in the 70's! Oh well, I'm probably off the wall on that one! I'm also pretty sure I saw Walley Murphy with A.A.T.W. in Phila. Pa. playing a D~11 Dekley, back in the mid-80's!

Perhaps someone who knows Tom Brumley, personally, would give him a call. I'm not sure, but I believe there is a connection with Tom and the D 11 steel guitars. Any comments would be interesting.
