You would have to tune down three steps. Your bottom three strings would be quite a bit more loose.

Larry, Herb Remington used an A6, go to copendents under links at the top of the Foum page and look under unusual tunings. This shows his tuning. For the first 34 years I played, I used a B6th and didn't change anything on the guitar. But I don't know about going down to an A6th.

Actually, if you just increase string gages it should work. Fender's original tuning for their 400 was A6 with 8 strings, so your two strings below that would just be a hair heavier.

I think the Fender 400 or 1000 manual on their website has recommended gages for each note you could possibly use - you might check and see if it handles lower ones.

I think it's a great idea, actually - man, would that thing sound huge! Thought about a similar idea of tuning a guitar to A9 - sort of a baritone steel.

Jim, you may have something there! That would be a FULL sound! Plus, you may even cut down on breaking the third string a bit.

I use P5 + the C to C# knee lever when I want to play traditional A6 parts (Steelin Home, etc.).
