In a previous post Buddy Emmons said this about his new guitar.
"I’m hesitant to say much about a guitar until I use it in a live situation. I don’t accept live jobs in Nashville so I won’t know if it’s a keeper until after the St. Louis convention this coming Labor Day weekend."
Buddy, I was just wondering if you are ready to make a statement yet?
Thanks,
Jim |

I know all ears are different, but what Buddy had in St. Louis was the best I've heard him sound since the Blade! |

And pray tell, what brand of guitar is the "Blade", that has such a fantastic sound? |

Charles, The Blade is an Emmons Original. I believe he still has it.
I too thought Buddy sounded great on the Zum. I came in on Friday just as the first tune was starting, and the guitar was just filling the room with a wonderful, sweet tone. That, of course, may have something to do with the player behind it. Not discounting the "Zum" factor, because John Hughey's Zum had that same rich tone when I heard him Thursday evening. |

Thanks for the comments. I was very pleased with both the Zum’s performance at the convention and the feedback I received regarding the sound. I thought it was a keeper until I had the opportunity to play a hybrid model Bruce Zumsteg had on display in the Zum room. After a few minutes of begging, beseeching, and imploring, Bruce was kind enough to allow me to take it home and spend, more time with it. As of now, I believe I’ll be trading my all-pull Zum for the hybrid. It’s truly an amazing machine. |

Glyn,
The ZumSteel Hybrid has a changer that is a cross between an all-pull and a push-pull mechanism. It tunes like a push-pull in that you tune the primary raises with the tuning keys and the opens with Allen head screws at the changer. The rest of the changes you tune with nylon tuners, like a regular all-pull guitar.
Great sound, easy pedal action, and it has split-tuning! I own Hybrid number 17 and love it.

Dag...you made me drool looking at those Hybrid Zum's!!
I played the Hybrid two years ago in St Louis and immediately said it was the closet tonal qualities to my great sounding P/P's. At the show, I believe about 50% of the people comparing the original Zum changer and the Hybrid prefered the original changer. Both are winners!
Now I have to save my $$'s so I can order a Hybrid. I have a super sounding '79 Zum D-10; 8+5 birdseye maple that is priceless to me. Bruce just keeps building the ultimate machine.[This message was edited by Bill Simmons on 13 September 2006 at 12:49 PM.] |

I am very pleased with my Hybrid. It playes great, looks great, stays in tune and I could go on and on. Best of all it feels good in my hands and I love the tone. Just what I look for in a guitar.

Well I sat next to the "BIG E" on stage and let me tell you the sound of his steel was great. I was very happy for him and Bruce. The only thing that guitar needed was the touch of the Masters hands. Well we all got that in St. Louis. Buddy is playing so good and it was nice to see him back at the convention. Until next time my best to all, Bobby |

I suppose now that the 'waiting time' for a new ZumSteel just went from 18 months to 3 years.
Congratulations to Bruce for building a great guitar.

Looks like Mr. Zumsteg will be cancelling that vacation he had planned for summer, 2017. |
