Player on Don't Make Me Now, by Tammy?

Post by Rick Abbott »

I was wondering who played the steel intro on Don't Make Me Now, which is the B-side of D-I-V-O-R-C-E.

Well Billy Sherrill produced D.I.V.O.R.C.E and that was Lloyd Green on that; and Billy Sherrill also Produced that 45 with Don't Make me Now on flip-side; so my guess is Lloyd.(yes it's a guess from that info I listed).

I think that's a pretty reasonable guess, too, Ricky. Sherrill used Pete Drake a lot, but I don't think it sounds like Pete. It sure sounds like Lloyd to me. I looked and looked and could hardly find anything about that song.

This was recorded in a session before the D-I-V-O-R-C-E session. I think that it could be Sonny Garrish.

Not impressed that the producer didn't put a steel turnaround in the middle of the song.

From what I could tell, Sonny Garrish was unlikely. He was a little later than this recording. The producer was known to use Pete Drake and Lloyd Green at the time. I could be wrong.

from Lloyd Green

Hey ya'll Lloyd Green just sent me this info:
Ricky,
Just saw and listened to Tammy’s “Don’t Make Me Now”.
I played on the “B” side of “D-I-V-O-R-C-E “ , too.
Billy Sherrill knew he had his #1 with the new sound (E-F) with Tammy on Divorce so I guess he wasn’t as interested in choreographing the B side on which he allowed me flexibility to play a more traditional intro completely unlike the Divorce sound. But the entire intro is composed of an integration of phrases from which I later extracted each part and used on other songs with different artists.
I too wish he had let me also play the solo in the middle. Maybe I would have changed it from the intro??

Cheers,
Lloyd
There ya go; the real deal from the real Steel...LOL.

Dang, dude, that is completely amazing! Thank you, Ricky. And, thank you very much, Lloyd! My buddy, Terry Rouch, has been working on playing that intro and really, really likes it.
