I was taking a look at a Session 400 from the mid 70's.
Haven't seen this before, but the Peavey Black Widow speaker has the silver center cap removed. I looks like it was cut out with an Exacto knife or something. You can look right through the center of the speaker. The Sessions 400 sounds great though.
This "Mod" definitely looks like it was done on purpose. Anybody know why or has seen this before? _________________ blah, blah, blah.

Those early Black Widows had a voice coil former and dust cap made as one piece of formed aluminum. The caps would sometimes
split and rattle when played. Cutting the cap part out would stop the rattling and you could keep using the speaker.
That was something I did a few times if I didn't have a replacement basket for the speaker. I used to repair lots of Peavey gear in a former life.

Thanks Jeffrey!
I appreciate the information. Glad to hear there was a real reason for this "mod." The amp sounds as good as any Session 400 I have heard and I am glad to hear the mod was not terminal.
Thanks again! _________________ blah, blah, blah.

Hi Dan
I believe they’re called ‘dust caps’ and are there to prevent dust and debris from getting into the gap, in which the voice coil travels back and forth.
If it were mine, I’d replace the dust cap to prevent potential future damage.

You can buy dust caps and adhesive from Parts Express or watch a video and buy it from Simply Speakers. |

What Lee and Larry said. I've had the dust caps come loose in a couple of BWs. I always elect to re-glue them. In your case of a missing cap, I'd want to replace it. Not very expensive and a fairly straight forward repair. |
