Question for you effects experts: I'm interested only in the electronic operation of the pedal.

Funky design and operation aside, could this pedal be used as a volume pedal?

Description reads for use with fx pedals with exp input TRS cable or for control voltage use with a TS cable.

I know they are discontinued and that they made a strict volume pedal in the same Next Step design, but I'm just interested in the EXP pedal as a volume control for a particular application.

Thanks in advance for your time and input.

Expression pedals are made to control an internal circuit of another device. Basically, they are a "pot" pedal, but not a true volume pedal.

If you don't want to modify the expression pedal you'll need a VCA (voltage-controlled amplifier) to connect it to. This is basic analog synthesizer stuff.

The device connected to the expression pedal (keyboard, multi-fx unit, etc) will have a parameters menu where it could be assigned to either pre-amp volume if you are using an amp modeler in the unit, or global output of the unit. But, as Scott said, there is no way to use it in-line from a guitar to an amp input, since it is output-only.

Thanks. No, no synth involved here. Just looking for straight volume control. Looks like it's not going to work for that which is what I suspected.

I was just interested in the potless technology and the way the unit controls vol. output. Is this Hall effect technology or some other type?

It wouldn't necessarily have to be synth. Any effects unit with a volume pedal patch (or a volume control with option for external control) and an attachment for an expression pedal could probably use this.

But as has been noted, on it's own, it's not going to be a volume pedal without serious modification.
