RIP Larry "Wimpy" Sasser

Post by Bill Ferguson »

A true friend to everyone that he came in contact with.

We have been friends for over 50 years.

Grew up right around the corner from each other, but did not meet until we were in our 20's.

Love ya pal and will surely miss our conversations and time picking side by side on MANY different stages.

I met Larry at Scotty's around the early 1990s, when he was there with the Nashville Now Band. I was on the elevator and he walked in going to his room. He was very gracious and kind, very interested in 'me'. Asked about my family too-and I didn't even know him. Great guy and great steel player. Part of the Nashville history!

How very sad. I watched Nashville Now as often as I could just to see "Wimpy" playing steel with such a great house band. Textbook commercial E9 pedal steel and his sound always seemed to step right out. To this day his CD "Sassy Country" is still in my top ten steel albums. He always seemed to be having such a great time and had that big booming voice and laugh. I finally got to visit with him at St. Louis one year and left thinking what a thoroughly nice person and what a great personality. May he rest in peace and prayers for all of his family and friends.

Oh no. Was in touch with Larry Sept. 5th and he was joking around like his old self. This is absolutely heartbreaking.

I haven't been on the Forum in a while, having been distracted with work. George Sypert just called to tell me about Larry's passing. I am so very sad and sad for Evelyn. They are such sweet couple. Clearly, Larry didn't see this coming, maybe that is for the better. He had such physical health struggles over the last few years, but he kept a smile on his face and a good attitude. If I have the option, I want to go out the way Larry did, both in spirit and without pain. RIP my old friend. You're the best, man. Condolences to Evelyn.

Jeff Garden. I somehow lost his CD Sassy Country. Larry couldn't find a copy around his house, but said he had a box of "stuff" that should have a few of those CDs in it and would send me a copy when he found one. Wondering if I could get a copy from you? PM me if that is an option. Many thanks.

I am so thankful I was able to spend some time with Larry at the Paul Franklin Steel Camp. We told stories, talked shop, and had some good laughs.

Larry, you were very loved and will be missed but never forgotten.
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you

So sorry to hear about Larry's passing. We knew each other well as he and Del Reeve's entire band used to live in the same rooming house on Boscobel street. My condolences go out to his family.

Hearing of Larry's passing is like a punch in the gut. I'm very sad to hear he's no longer with us.

He and I have been friends for some 45 years. We even blew-up a new, demo Webb amp in '78 at a show in Asheville, NC. We laughed about that ever since.

I spoke to him a couple months ago and he sounded his usual, jovial self.

Larry was such a good guy. A great player too who always got such a wonderful tone. I'm sorry to hear he's gone on but I know from our recent conversation that he believed in The Lord. I'm happy for that..!!

My prayers and deepest sympathies go out for all his family and friends.

Sincerely,
Chris "Tiny" Olson

Stage Door Lounge

Post by Bill Bassett »

In 1983 I had the greatest gig ever. Playing at Opryland right after the TV show concluded. Each evening the Nashville Now show went live from the stage door lounge at the Opryland Hotel. The band included top flight, A list studio cats. Among them Steel Player Larry (Wimpy) Sasser. He helped us immeasurably during our time there. A good friend, generous and talented. Rest In Peace Larry. Thanks for so much of your time and attention back then.
