Topic: Is This Peavey Vintage Alnico 12" Speaker Worth Reconing? |

Hi Everyone,
I need some advice. I recently purchased two Peavey Alnico 12" speakers that came out of a Peavey Mace. One works and one doesn't. I put an ohm meter and got a reading on one speaker but zero on the other. In addition, the one showing zero ohms had a bit of grinding when I depressed the cone. The cone looks to be in pretty good shape and the frame is OK for its age. In the top picture, the boot is caved in slightly and the alnico part seems to be rusty. Not sure if that's a big deal or not. Oddly enough, one side seems to be a lot cleaner than the other for some reason.
Here are some pictures of the speaker that will need to be reconed; that is, if it's worth the trouble. What do you all think? Is it worth it to get this old alnico reconed just to keep the vintage vibe alive? Is it even POSSIBLE to get this reconed? Can anyone tell me what the numbers and markings mean?
I plan to someday put these in a Peavey Deuce and wanted two speakers of similar vintage for the sake of nostalgia. The original speakers were CTS.
By the way, I paid $20 for both speakers--one good and one bad.
Here are the pictures.

Don,
That speaker was made by Eminence in the 52nd week of 1977. Definitely worth reconing. Those are pretty good guitar speakers, Peavey used them in several amps they they made back then. It is pretty rusty but should clean up and work well after a recone. Parts are still available for repairing it. I would recommend reconing both of them if you are going to use them in an amplifier. Message me if you want a price for reconing.

UPDATE: I had a local speaker company look at my Eminence. Fortunately, he was able to fix it. The problem was with one of the wire leads! No need for a recone!
I now have two working original Mace speakers that will eventually find a permanent home in my new Peavey Mace.
Thanks to all of you who weighed in on my poll.
