My uncle, who was also my godparent, passed away this weekend. He was a real "mountain man". He had "Red Headed Stranger" before the masses. The funeral is tomorrow.
I was woodshedding last night to some of the good oldies, reminiscing, gettin' kinda choked up, and really feeling the instrument, when I realized something.
I was blocking at a high rate of speed. It seemed so natural and easy. I'd NEVER been able to do that before...

Also, if engaged in a funeral, don't listen to Robby Turner's version of "Healing Hands of Time" unless you've got one GREAT BIG handkerchief...

I used to call those kinds of moments "breakthroughs". An old friend, and monster jazz guitar player, once told me..."practise correctly and intensely and one day it'll all just fall in your lap". He was right and since then I've had countless breakthroughs.

The problem that I have is always trying to think myself through what I'm playing, instead of letting the music flow from within. When I CAN "let go" and just let it happen, I am amazed at what I can do. All that practise does take root, but too often is obscured by our own self-doubt.

Just my phylosophical 2 cents.

Mike,

I couldn't have said it better. I spent far too many years trying to think through my playing. Jeff Newman said "I was not hearing the music" - how right he was. Ya just gotta let it happen, and it will when you don't expect it.
