Yet another newbee has joined SGF...

Howdy, folks,

I've been wanting to play pedal steel for years and I've finally got off my butt and bought one. The Little Buddy needs some work. But I'll take that as it comes...

Before I start asking a bunch of foolish questions, is there an FAQ section on the SGF? I know I'll be asking dumb questions, but I'd like to make them as few as possible..

A bit about me: I've been playing banjo, fiddle, guitar... off and on for years. A few years ago a friend loaned me a Dobro, but no matter how much money I offered, she wouldn't sell it, (even though she doesn't play it..).

That experience, along with a decades long
enjoyment of what other players are doing has left me here...

I now have a steep learning curve to climb, and 10 new strings that need to be tuned.

Please excuse the many ignorant questions that will be coming....

Here's one:

What is the origin and definition of the word copedant? And how is it pronunced?

Hey Del! Copedent is actually an abbreviation for "Chord pedal arrangement" and was coined by Tom Bradshaw. Good luck with your tuning, you'll probably spend as much time on that as you will playing to start with .

Great, Kyle, thanks for the origin and definition of the word copedent. For a while there I thought is might come from the Latin for putting your foot in your teeth... Or worse...

Now, how is it pronounced? "Co pedant?"
Or "Co Peedant"?

And speaking of copedent's, I seem to have lost mine... The new strings came up to pitch just fine, but the way is was set up by the previous owner seems not to agree with the recommended tuning in the manual.

Is there such a thing as a standard E9 tuning?

I'd rather play than researsh, but, whatever it takes I'm gonna rein in this beast..
